Project Goal

The Lakewood Park Sidewalk Mural was commissioned through Spectacular Vernacular, a public art initiative I developed for the City of Lakewood to support artist-led projects that strengthen community identity, activate public spaces, and integrate creativity into everyday civic infrastructure.

The project sought to transform a functional bicycle rack into a permanent public artwork that would enhance the visitor experience at Lakewood Park while supporting active transportation and reinforcing the city's commitment to creative placemaking.

More broadly, the project served as an example of how public art can become part of daily civic life rather than existing as a standalone cultural object.

Context

While serving as City Architect for the City of Lakewood, I recognized an opportunity to create a scalable public art program that could support both artists and community development goals.

In response, I developed Spectacular Vernacular, a public art initiative designed to connect artists, neighborhoods, businesses, civic organizations, and municipal departments through site-specific projects embedded within the public realm.

The program emphasized accessible, community-oriented interventions capable of generating meaningful civic impact while working within realistic municipal budgets and implementation frameworks.

The Lakewood Park Bike Rack became one of the program's early commissions and demonstrated how public art could be integrated into ordinary infrastructure to create a more engaging and memorable public experience.

Located along Lake Erie's shoreline, Lakewood Park serves as one of the city's most visited public spaces and provided an ideal setting for a project that would be experienced by residents and visitors on a daily basis.

Leadership and Project Management

As founder of the Spectacular Vernacular program and project manager for the commission, I led the project from concept development through installation.

Key responsibilities included:

• Developed the Spectacular Vernacular public art program, including its mission, governance structure, funding framework, and implementation strategy.

The completed bike rack transformed a functional public amenity into a permanent work of public art that contributes to the identity and visitor experience of Lakewood Park.

More significantly, the project demonstrated the effectiveness of the Spectacular Vernacular framework as a tool for delivering artist-led civic projects through cross-departmental collaboration and community-focused design.

The commission helped establish a replicable model for future public art projects throughout the city, proving that relatively small investments in creative placemaking can generate lasting cultural and civic value.

Reflection

The Lakewood Park Sidewalk Mural represents more than a single public art commission. It reflects the creation of a programmatic framework that enabled artists, municipal departments, and community stakeholders to work together toward shared civic goals.

The experience reinforced an approach that continues to shape my work today: successful cultural projects depend not only on strong creative ideas, but also on the systems, processes, and partnerships that support their realization.

Whether developing a public art program, managing a museum exhibition, or leading a capital project, my focus remains the same—building the organizational structures necessary to transform vision into meaningful public experience.
